The parish church

The actual parish Church, pride of this community, was building between 1769 and 1775 with the project of the architect M. Promperg-Costa, the place, where it rose, was the same of the two previous churches, those of ‘500 and of ‘200. On the smooth surface there are the statues of Saints Filippo and Giacomo, who is the minor patron of Cortina d’Ampezzo(also if he is represented with the iconographic characteristics of Giacomo the main, that of Compostella ).
The inside has got only a nave, with niches few deep, it is close by the wide presbytery (choir), it is lit by two big rectangular windows.
It is enriched by some frescos of Zeiler, we are going to speak about him in the next part, and the ceiling is made by Ghedina.

The painting cycles

The painter Franz Anton Zeiler(1716-1793), famous in the zone of Tirolo, because he decorated many churches, made the decorations of the nave, realised between the 1774 and the 1775.
Moreover he painted two lateral altar-pieces, which are in the church of Difesa today, on the contrary it is mysteriously disappeared the altar-piece which he had made to the main altar, it was never arrived in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
In the first panel on the top of the nave, near the door, is represented “the martyr of St. Giacomo”, in the second one “the expulsion of the Merchants of the temple”, accompanied to gold shields with the traditional figures of evangelists; in the third one is presented “the martyr of St. Filippo”.
The 14 station of VIA CRUCIS are made by the same author. In the Presbyterian volute there is a precious frame with “Trinity”, a work of Giuseppe Ghedina(1825-1898), realised in 1859, on the commune commission.
On the Presbyterian walls we can find two big paints of Zeiler, they have a biblical subject, on the right there is the episode of “Ester in front of Assuero” (Ester 5,1-14) on the left “the Salomon justice ”.
Unfortunately images were SCIALBATE in 1859 and then cleaned in 1929 by the priest don Pietro Frenademez.

The altars

The main altar was realised in 1773 by Johann Mussack , with the two statues of the Saints Pietro and Paolo, all the work is made by decorated wood and STUCCOLUSTRO.
The altar-piece realised in 1679 by Giuseppe Zanchi paints “the Virgin and Saints Filippo and Giacomo”(another time he is confused with the main); the altar-piece was extending by Giuseppe Lacedelli(1754-1833) for adapting to new frame.
In the cymatium (up on the altar) we can find a bas-relief of the Virgin, it was realised by P Hopfner in 1773, who is also the author of the processional crucifix (also if it is wrong attributed to Brustolon ) and remarkable confessionals by the main hall.

The two first lateral altars have always made by Mussack, on false marble, they are adorned by couple of woody statues of Saints. Under the right altar we can find the relics of St. Liberale, the altar-piece is made by Giuseppe Ghedina and it represents “St. Giuseppe with Child”, the lower part has been adapted for the last 30 years, it was likely made by the painter’s son.
In the left altar is left the relics of St.Teofilo. In the altar-piece ”Our Lady of Sorrows”, painted of Luigi Gillarduzzi (1822- Vienna 1856): it is the only work of this painter in his country.
In central niches of the nave we can find the older altars, they came from the previous church.
On the right we find the altar of the Carmine Virgin by carved wood, painted and adorned. In dossal there is an altar-piece that comes from the veneta-tormezzina school, it was ordered by the glorifies community in 1693, and it is attributed to Antonio Lazzarini(1672-1732):it represents “the Virgin who is offering scapulars to Saints Teresa d’Avila, Simone Stock and Pietro d’Alcantara”.
On the left there is the altar of the Virgin by Rosario, it was originally the main altar and it probably contained another altar-piece.
The work of Andrea Brustolon (1662-1732)and of his shop, was realising during 1703. Today in the niche we can find a statue of the Virgin, it came from the brissinese school in the first years of 600:it is the image it was revering by Rosario brotherhood.
The beautiful tabernacle is a work of the same artist.
