The organ

The organ was built by the Mauracher firm of Linz and inaugurated on October 31 1954, by the parish priest monsignor Enrico Forer.
The organ has three manuals and a pedal board with 30 electrically transmitted notes. In 2002, maestro Andrea Zeni completed an important restoration that enhanced the instrument’s value.
History however tells us of a series of “predecessors” forerunning today’s prestigious instrument.

A document from 1561 attests the existence of an organ in the fifteenth century church. The organ was moved to the Church Our Lady of Defence when the new organ was acquired (1703).

At the time m.o Francesco Kecht, an organ-maker from Bressanone, built a new organ for the parish church. In 1774 the instrument was disassembled because the new, larger parish church was being built. The organ turned out to be too small for it.

Hence, the inhabitants of Cortina d’Ampezzo turned to the Venetian school of Gaetano Callido (1727-1813), which built a new organ with 18 registers, situated in the church’s conch in April 1777 thanks to the excellent job of the wood merchant Bolis.

A contract was signed in 1885 with the’ Zachistal & Capek’ firm of Krems for the construction of a new and larger 24-register organ: archive testimonies describe a “beautiful work of art”. Unfortunately, the Calido organ was also delivered to the company. But with the passing of time, this new instrument also turned out to be inadequate for the church and was substituted in 1954.
