History

We can reasonably suppose, that Cadore was be evangelised during the Roman domination, about 5-6 century.
However the process of conversation was slow: it has still conserved ancient beliefs and pagan rites for centuries.
Cadore formed an unique parish; the only one priest resided in the centre, it took the name of Pieve.
The first real religious organism in Ampezzo goes back to 1100-1500. The village resulted, at that time, under the church of Pieve of Cadore, that it was subjected by the Patriarch of Aquileia. The effective government, every way, was exercised by the lords of Camino, Patriarch’s feudatories: he reserved the region on feud from the German emperors.

In 1208 was confirmed the patrimonial separation from Pieve of some churches, among that also Ampezzo. The cure of souls of Ampezzo obtained the title of “pieve” or parish in 1347. During the war of “lega di Cambrai”(1509), the emperor Massimiliano seized of Aquileia, seat of the patriarchy .
In this way it began a long period of fight between Vienna and Venezia for the control of the religious authority, in Veneto but also in the place of Gorizia, and in other areas occupied to Austrian people.
After the peace tractates in 1516-1523, Cortina was under the political protection of Asburgo’s, thank to the favour of the Pope and the France, but the religious part remained under the control of the Patriarch, because it was a part of the archdeacon of Cadore. The Patriarch run all the parishes of veneto and Austria. The last one Patriarch with this power was Dionisio Delfino, who came to visit Cortina in 1701. When he died (1734), his successor became his nephew Daniele Delfino, 109° Patriarch of Aquileia, who was in Ampezzo in 1735: in this occasion he consecrated the church of Campo. His nomination was immediately contrasted from Vienna and also Venezia.

The issue for the patriarchal jurisdiction in Austrian place ended with the division of the territory in two parts(1749): the Veneta zone was left to Delfino, named cardinal, and the Austrian Part was left to Carlo Michele, Lord of Attems, vicar apostolic, who lived in Gorizia. The power to nominate the two archbishop was left to the Impair and to Venezia. The populations of veneto was administrated by the bishop of Udine, the populations of Austria was administrated by the bishop of Gorizia.

The distance from Gorizia was not a positive thing for Cortina. There were few contacts with the bishop, and it was often, that for the administration of sacraments or for the consecration of church was called the bishop of Udine. The first apostolic administrator of Gorizia, Carlo Michele of Attems, went to Cortina in 1751 when he consecrated the rebuilt Church of Difesa.
He returned then in 1762 for the administration of Confirmation.

In this occasion he ordered that the parish, too small, became bigger or rebuilt.
The bishop of Gorizia, lord of Edling, opened the new church built by the parish priest Francesco Saverio, his cousin, in 1776. Since 1789 it has been given the title of dean to the parish priest of Ampezzo.
When Ampezzani heard, that the bishop of Udine, Nicolò Sagredo, was arriving in Cadore in 1790, they invited him in Ampezzo: he was the last bishop from Veneto, who visited the village.

The emperor Giuseppe 2 has given again the consent to divide the territory since 1784, maybe because he didn’t want to create new contrast. In this way he surprised the archbishop of Gorizia and the Pope. Part of the territory was given to the seat of Gradisca, another part was given to Lubiana. Cortina became part of Lubiana.
Also Lubiana has been dividing since 1789: part of territory was given to the bishop of Bressanone, and Cortina changed again seat. This last solution ended in 1964, excluded the Napoleonic period, in this date the Saint Seat gave the parish of Cortina to Belluno(Belluno-Feltre since 1986), and today is still so.
